Affirmation Conferences focus on the whole person, so while we will do a lot of learning through listening to speakers and participating in Affinity groups and workshops, we will also be entertained, sing, dance, explore historic sites, and perform service projects.

Friday

Youth & Families Film Screening & Discussion – Special Free Event Open to the Public

We’re delighted to provide TWO special screenings and discussions of the Family Acceptance Project’s award winning family education film “Families Are Forever” – the moving documentary of an active Mormon family’s journey to accept and support their young gay son – as part of Affirmation’s youth-focused events at the conference.

These screenings will take place from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM on Friday, September 12th in the University Guest House Conference Center’s City Creek Room. This event is open to the local community and to those attending the conference and is provided free of charge by Affirmation and the Family Acceptance Project.

“Families Are Forever” is one a series of short documentary films produced by the Family Acceptance Project and guided by their groundbreaking research which shows that how families respond to their LGBT children affects their children’s health, mental health and well-being, including suicide and self-esteem. The Family Acceptance Project will provide copies of their research-based family education booklet for each family that attends. This publication – Supportive Families, Healthy Children – is the only “Best Practice” for suicide prevention for Mormons in the national Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention and was written by Caitlin Ryan and Bob Rees to help Mormon families to support their LGBT children in the context of LDS values and beliefs.  Watch the Trailer Here!

First Timer’s/Safe Zone Session

If this is your first conference, please plan to join us for this session from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. on Friday. This will give you an opportunity to get to know other LGBT/SSA Mormons, their family members and friends and learn about how to make the most out of your conference experience.

Saturday

Youth Activities

We plan on a number of LGBT youth and the children of LGBT parents to be joining us this year.  We have prepared a number of activities “especially for youth” that are affirming, uplifting and FUN!

This is the Place State Park

Saturday afternoon we will travel to the historic This is the Place State Park to take a group photo in front of the famous “This is the Place” Monument, enjoy lunch together, explore the historic village, and do small service projects while socializing after lunch.

An Evening of Affirmation

This annual event is something you won’t want to miss. The evening begins with a Testimony & Spiritual Story Sharing Session, that one attendee described as being “the most moving and authentic testimony meeting I’ve attended in over 40 years as a Mormon!” Followed by dinner and then special guests. Last year we heard from Steve and Barb Young, witnessed a moving dance by Benji Schwimmer, and heard our beautiful Affirmation Choir perform. You will laugh, cry, and rejoice all in one night!  For information on this year’s speakers visit the Speakers page.

Saturday Dance & Dessert Social

It’s wonderful to socialize with other people who understand what it is like to be LGBT and Mormon or family members and friends of LGBT Mormons.  It’s even additionally fun to have the chance to dance with one another in a safe and healthy environment, free from judgment of others yet in the presence of those we love.
